MEHS students mix business with philanthropy

A small business class at Mt. Edgecumbe High School in Sitka is gearing up for a commercial venture this spring. If all goes well, the students should earn back the money they invested in the business, plus a profit that they’ll distribute to shareholders as a dividend.While this all sounds fairly typical for a high school business class, it is actually something quite innovative. The Mt. Edgecumbe students developed their business plan with the goal of helping Sitka’s homeless population.

Mt. Edgecumbe business students have launched a small company to sell wristbands, and they'll split the profits with an organization fighting homelessness in Sitka. Kayla Merculief (Jr-Sitka) is the CEO of the business, Richard Corbett (Sr-Dillingham) is the VP of Marketing, and Robert Nielsen (Soph-Anch) is the VP of Public Relations.

Sitka teams stack the finals of today's 3A regional basketball tournament in Ketchikan (and both the boys' and girls' championships are rematches of the 2011 final). Yakutat boys and girls will play in tonight's 2A final at Mt. Edgecumbe High. Bad weather cancelled the para-jumping, but the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Coast Guard did a lot of flying yesterday (Thu 3-1-12) in joint exercises in Sitka. Alaska Board of Fisheries approves a rare charter/commercial compromise: safely releasing rockfish unwanted by sport fishermen.

Canadian aircraft, crews flying in Sitka skies this week

The aircraft from Vancouver Island, along with the U.S. Coast Guard’s MH-60T helicopter managed to get up in the air for a little while on Thursday. But as the snowflakes moved in and visibility moved out, they returned to the Air Station Sitka and put the training on hold.

Sitka museum aims for state-of-the art expansion

Planning for the expansion of the Sitka Historical Museum has moved from talk to floor plans. Museum director Bob Medinger displayed two options for a 6,000 square-foot addition to Harrigan Centennial Hall for the Sitka Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday (2-29-12). See the floor plans here.
