Thirty-eight finalists stood up at Blatchley Middle School's Spelling Bee Wednesday night (1-16-13). And then there was only one: champion Abigail Fitzgibbon. Spellers worked their way to word #169 on the official Scripps National Spelling Bee list before Fitzgibbon won on intuitive. Emma Falvey, Evan Ipok, and Whitney McAuthur were runners-up.

Wounded bears to count differently under change

Previously, bears that were wounded and then escaped were automatically counted as a dead female bear. But the Alaska Professional Hunters Association, whose members include bear hunting guides, argued that in many cases, that’s not true.

Board rejects tougher measures for nannies

The Alaska Board of Game has rejected tougher restrictions for hunters who shoot nannies. Managers have been concerned about declining numbers of the female mountain goats near Sitka. But the seven-member board voted unanimously on Tuesday to keep the status quo in place.
