Christmas present

This is the choir at St. Michael’s Cathedral in Sitka, led by Kathy Hope-Erickson, participating in the Divine Liturgy. The service this year was especially poignant, since the cathedral – which was previously destroyed by fire in 1966 – sits just a few feet above sea level, and was at risk of inundation had a tsunami developed after last Friday’s (1-4-13) magnitude 7.5 earthquake. That all was well in Sitka on this day felt like a very big Christmas present.

Kennicott delayed 48 hours for elevator repair

The state ferry Kennicott has resumed its cross-gulf sailings after a two-day delay in Yakutat for repairs. Unlike some of her older sister ships, the Kennicott did not experience the trouble in its engine or propulsion systems. Rather, it was one of it was one of its more modern pieces of equipment that experienced problems: the vehicle elevator.

Marine Highway head steps down

The head of the state’s ferry system is stepping down. Capt. Mike Neussl’s last day of work as the Deputy Commissioner for Marine Operations will be next Friday, January 11. His departure comes close on the heels of a decision by Gov. Parnell to scale back the Alaska-class ferry project – a decision which took even the region’s legislators by surprise. He says his resignation is not fallout from the issue.
