Sitka’s March Madness!

It was nonstop basketball action last week (Mar 5 - 9, 2013) at the BJ McGillis gym at Mt. Edgecumbe High School. Twenty basketball teams from Southeast competed for state tournament berths in the 2A, 3A, and 4A classifications.

Former principal charged with sexual assaults

A Sitka grand jury on Friday charged 54-year-old Joseph Robidou on six counts of felony sexual assault. He also faces an additional five misdemeanor charges for incidents that allegedly happened beginning last May and as recently as January. All of them involve other adults, and prosecutors say students at the school were not involved.

Trista Patterson brings the world to her island

Trista Patterson has been a kayak guide in Italy, a Fulbright Scholar and worked with the United Nations. For all that, she calls Sitka home and joined us on Earbones February 22nd to share the 10 songs that she would choose to have if stranded on a deserted island. Of course she also brought in a dessert recipe to share, because it is always better to have a sweet something when dancing on your island. Size matters

The biggest construction crane in Alaska is now assembled and operating at Sitka’s Blue Lake dam. And the public will be able to take a look this month. The crane itself weighs about 2-million pounds. It has an overall length of 364-feet. The main boom can lift and lower 47,500 pounds. In order to carry that load across the canyon, the crane has 660,000 pounds of counter-weight.
