Aerial survey finds predators, no herring

That’s the report from the first aerial survey of the 2013 herring season in Sitka Sound. Alaska Department of Fish & Game officials found 24 whales in the Sound, mostly between Kruzof Island and Crow Island, and offshore of north Middle Island.

48-Hour Film Festival a creative sprint

Sitka Film Society director Shannon Haugland and local filmmaker Van Hanson discuss this year's 48-Hour Film Festival. Filmmakers will have 2 days to write, produce, direct, and screen their work. Participants can sign up this Friday, 5-7 PM at 713 Sawmill Creek Road, and return their finished product on Sunday.

New Sealaska bill a controversial compromise

A revised version of Sealaska Lands Legislation is back before Congress. Sen. Lisa Murkowski introduced the new bill. S. 340 replaces legislation from two years ago which came under immediate fire from environmentalists, Southeast communities, and even some Sealaska shareholders who claimed it overstepped the intent of the 1971 Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. Sealaska vice-president Rick Harris was in Sitka Wednesday to outline the new bill for the Chamber of Commerce.
