Officially, no one has said what, if anything, might happen to Jim Dinley, but there are signs. His office is packed up. His nameplate no longer sits on the lip of his desk. Sitka library receives heartfelt donation

Kettleson Library in Sitka has been planning an expansion project for the past decade, using a combination of public and private funding. On Saturday, the library staff announced its newest, and perhaps most surprising, donation yet.

Board cuts high school activities director

The Sitka School board cut no staff when it met this week (4-22-13) to approve its final budget for next year, but it did eliminate what many consider a critical position at the high school.The board is also counting on support from the Assembly to tie up the last loose ends of the district’s finances.

State epidemiologist: Stop the spread of whooping cough

An infant in Western Alaska died of whooping cough last month. It's the first recorded death from the disease in the state since 2002. The infant was younger than two months, the age when whooping cough vaccinations start. The bacterial infection, which is also known as pertussis is extremely contagious and the number of cases in Alaska started increasing dramatically late last year.

Cause of death unknown for Sitka man, 39

Jason Shaffer died sometime between 11 p.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. Monday, when his body was discovered inside the family home in the 2200 block of Sawmill Creek Road. Sitka police Lt. Barry Allen says there were NO signs of injury or foul play.
