Memories, monologues, rants, prayers on stage

Jude Reis, Heather Bauscher and Elena Gustafson offer a sneak peek (including a reading) of "A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer," on stage April 19 at the Sheet'ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi. The performance raises money for Sitkans Against Family Violence, an organization that works to end domestic and sexual violence in Sitka.

Getting ready for prom can be a time-consuming process, and finding the right dress isn’t easy, especially when you live in rural Alaska. At Sitka’s Mt. Edgecumbe High -- the state-run boarding school -- students got special treatment recently from a group of volunteers, most of whom work for Alaska Airlines.

Panel orders Sitka park head reinstated

The order came April 3 from the Merit Systems Protection Board in Washington, D.C. It judges grievances brought by federal employees against federal agencies. The National Park Service must put Miller back in her old job within 20 days.

Library technology worth hooting about

Kettleson Memorial Library has installed some technology worth hooting about. OWL, or “Online With Libraries,” is a broadband internet initiative for public libraries. Eleven internet terminals and a huge videoconferencing screen comprise the system. A launch party is scheduled for this Saturday (4-6-13) at 10 AM.

Sitkans stage protest as oil tax bill advances

Protesters in Sitka ripped up a giant check made out to Alaska’s big three oil companies Thursday at a rally opposing changes to the state’s oil tax structure. About 75 people, including Sitka’s mayor, gathered at Crescent Harbor Shelter at noon to voice their displeasure toward Senate Bill 21.

Sitka sac roe closes as co-op yields 250 tons

The Sitka Sound sac roe herring season is over. The Alaska Department of Fish & Game announced the closure Thursday morning. After three competitive openings, the seine fleet captured just under half the 11,549 tons it was hoping for.
