Seiners try co-op to finish Sitka herring season

As in 2012, this year’s herring began spawning shortly after seining opened, dramatically reducing the numbers of unspawned females, whose egg skeins are the money-making product of the Sac Roe fishery. On the flip side, a healthy spawn is critical to subsistence fishermen, who gather and distribute roe-on-hemlock branches across the region.

Chef merges Native traditions with contemporary cuisine

As part of his tour through Southeast earlier this spring, Chef Rob Kinneen stopped in at Sitka’s Mt. Edgecumbe High School and taught a cooking class. Although Kinneen is a Tlingit, with roots in Petersburg, Sitka, and Metlakatla, he is a ready hand with delicacies from other regions, including muktuk sushi. Mt. Edgecumbe junior Shanelle Afcan is involved with the Fish-to-Schools program. She attended Kinneen’s class and sent this audio postcard.

All these scenarios - though realistic - were not real. They were created by an organization whose job is to test the resources of communities to deal with real-world threats.
