As in 2012, this year’s herring began spawning shortly after seining opened, dramatically reducing the numbers of unspawned females, whose egg skeins are the money-making product of the Sac Roe fishery. As part of his tour through Southeast earlier this spring, Chef Rob Kinneen stopped in at Sitka’s Mt. Edgecumbe High School and taught a cooking class. Although Kinneen is a Tlingit, with roots in Petersburg, Sitka, and Metlakatla, he is a ready hand with delicacies from other regions, including muktuk sushi. Mt. Edgecumbe junior Shanelle Afcan is involved with the Fish-to-Schools program. She attended Kinneen’s class and sent this audio postcard.
