Paremski: Piano, performance gives ‘incredible rush’

Natasha Paremski started playing piano when she was 3. A year later, she began lessons. She played with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at age 15 and recorded her first CD the same year. Between now and July 6, she'll play for you, at the Sitka Summer Music Festival.

It was just a few years ago that Sitka’s electric utility predicted a significant increase in the number of electric vehicles on the road, especially in places with inexpensive electric power. But Sitka's interest in electric cars has remained flat. KCAW’s Erik Neumann recently visited an electric car owner in Sitka to find out why the cars have been slow to catch on.

USCG suspends search for missing fisherman

The Coast Guard and other agencies searched more than 450 square miles on Tuesday. Petty Officer Sara Francis says the search is now in the hands of the Troopers. 25-year-old Alan Young was one of two people aboard the fishing vessel "Swift."

‘Master Bander’ tracks Alaska’s long-range hummers

Hummingbirds made their way back to Sitka on schedule this spring. But this year, for the first time, they’ve also been followed by a hummingbird bander. Fred Bassett is a “master bander” from Alabama who spent three days in Sitka last week capturing and banding 153 hummingbirds, most out at Medvejie hatchery Silver Bay. He's attempting to prove that so-called "western" species like Alaska's rufous hummingbirds are wintering in large numbers in the Southeastern US.

Carol Odess: Campus donor fishes, sweeps, believes

Carol Odess, of Alabama, gave a major gift last year to help restore Allen Hall on the Sitka Fine Arts Campus. This year she's back to teach fly fishing to breast cancer survivors, sweep the floors, and bring renewed energy to campus fund raising. She and SFAC development staffer Anne O'Brien discuss this summer's $100,000 challenge.
