Forest Service warns of Tongass fire danger

SMOKEY_100Warm temperatures forecast for the weekend, combined with relatively dry weather over the past few weeks, have created an unusual situation in the Tongass: fire danger. The Sitka Ranger District of the US Forest Service issued a very rare fire warning for the region over the weekend. Perry Edwards, ecosystem staff for the district, says Tongass fires are caused by humans.

Sealaska, Sitka Tribe sign Redoubt Falls agreement

Sealaska and the Sitka Tribe have reached an agreement on the management of Redoubt Lake Falls -- when, and if, the property is ever conveyed by the federal government. Representatives from both organizations met in a signing ceremony Friday afternoon (6-14-13) in Sitka.

Little cat feet?

Blue skies bring more than sunshine and light breezes to Sitka. Morning fog is common as the air warms up slightly. Last Sunday morning (6-9-13) photographer Owen Kindig saw a cloud bank roiling over Kruzof Island, and set up his camera near Eliason Harbor to capture this time lapse video. We think poet Carl Sandburg may have come up with a different metaphor if he had seen Sitka fog roll in: We get the little feet, and the rest of the cat too!

Update: LeConte resumes service Sunday

The LeConte will resume service Sunday, June 16, but about 5½ hours behind schedule. The Malaspina will sail Juneau to Gustavus roundtrip on Saturday night to alleviate stranded travelers in Gustavus. The ferry will depart Auke Bay at 10 .p.m and return in time to sail Lynn Canal as scheduled Sunday morning.

Downtown Sitka street closure experiment begins

Part of downtown Sitka was blocked off to vehicle traffic on Wednesday. It’s part of an experiment to see if portions of Lincoln Street might operate well as a pedestrian mall when cruise ships are in town. Although the closure wasn’t well advertised, it has long been on the minds of a group interested in revitalizing Sitka’s main street.
