‘Little’ Redoubt Lake a boon to sockeye?

The US Forest Service believes fish populations in Redoubt Lake near Sitka survived last month’s devasting landslide unharmed, and may even benefit from the event. The massive avalanche piled up debris over twenty-feet thick across the the lake’s inlet stream, completely destroying a nearby recreational cabin whose occupants escaped in the nick of time. A watershed team recently surveyed the area and concluded that the lake’s sockeye run was likely unaffected. A new lake forming above the slide may improve habitat.

Dept. says Sitka needs more police officers

The Sitka Police Department is understaffed and overworked. That was the message department staff sent to the Sitka Assembly at a work session on Monday evening. The problems come at a time when police say they’re busier than ever, especially handling drug-related crime.

Sitka High Lady Wolves Softball just captured their fourth consecutive small schools state championship. Senior Stefania Potzruski played on all four teams. She's joined by teammates Megan Reid, Hannah McCarty, and by assistant coach Kelly Garvin discussing their amazing season, and the dramatic finale at the state tourney.

Lady Wolves Softball: Four titles and counting

Sitka High School won the state small-school softball championship -- again. The Lady Wolves beat Ketchikan 7 to 6 on Saturday to claim their fourth consecutive state championship. Coach Bob Potrzuski says winning has in no way become routine. The girls won the title game by scoring with two outs in the seventh inning.

Group tries to start ‘bag library’ to encourage reuse

What if you could "check out" a reusable bag at the store? Michelle Putz, with the Sitka Global Warming Group, talks about starting a "bag library" in Sitka, to encourage people to reuse fabric bags when they shop, rather than plastic or paper disposable bags. From June 3 - 28, the group is collecting bags at Kettleson Memorial Library, in hopes of starting its own collection for loan.
