Blue Lake Hydro: Nothing small in Sitka’s biggest project

Tunneling work for Sitka’s Blue Lake hydro expansion project is just about wrapped up, and construction crews are pouring concrete for the new powerhouse. Dean Orbison, project manager for the Sitka Electric Department, updated the Sitka Chamber of Commerce this week (9-4-13) on the progress of the city’s largest-ever public works undertaking.

Tidwell: Conservation partnerships offset losses in Forest staff, funding

tidwell_120Forest Service chief Tom Tidwell says his agency will continue to rely on the support of conservation groups to perform forest restoration, as long as federal dollars for the work continue to dwindle. Speaking to reporters during a review of the Alaska region's operations, Tidwell said that the Forest Service was still focused on building sustainable economies in timber and minerals throughout the nation, but that it valued its partnerships with conservation groups for restoration work. Without partnerships, Tidwell suggested that the work might not get done.

ATIA conference will be Sitka’s largest-ever

Tonia Rioux, executive director of the Sitka Convention and Visitors' Bureau, says this October's meeting of the Alaska Travel Industry Association could be Sitka's largest-ever conference. Floor sessions exceed the capacity of Harrigan Centennial Hall, and will be held in the Hames Center. Local volunteers are needed.
