Task force, Governor remain focused on domestic violence

The small flags on the courthouse lawn in Sitka this week make a statement that is difficult to hear. The hundreds of flags represent the domestic violence calls that police respond to, and the victims and children involved in domestic violence in town -- in a single year. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The local domestic violence task force -- and even Governor Sean Parnell -- are maintaining a full-court press to keep the problem in the public eye.

What happens when you invite an entire community to present dozens of ideas for improving public health, and to whittle those ideas down to 2 or 3 in a single day? Progress. In other communities this might be a recipe for mayhem, or empty promises. But the Sitka Health Summit has a track record of choosing ideas that lead to action.

Low turnout, new faces in ’13 municipal election

Sitka voters put two new faces on the assembly, and returned a 6-year incumbent to the school board, in municipal elections held on Tuesday. Voters also approved extending the 1-percent seasonal sales tax for two years to cover outstanding school bond debt. Although there are some absentee ballots yet to be counted, they’re not likely to make a difference in the outcome.

Sitka Police Chief Sheldon Schmitt and Elisabeth Schafer, a paralegal with the District Attorney's office, discuss the meaning of the flags on Sitka's courthouse lawn this week. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Both Schmitt and Schafer are on Sitka's Domestic Violence Task Force.
