The Sitka Sound Science Center has a new fellow in town for its scientist-in-residency program. Alison Stimpert studies the sounds that animals make. It’s a field called bio-acoustics.

Herring fleet goes on 2-hour notice Monday

The Sitka herring fishery goes on two-hour notice Monday at 11 a.m. The announcement came Friday from the Alaska Department of Fish & Game. It means if Fish & Game calls an opening, the fleet has at least two hours to make it to the location of the fishery. But what prompts the two-hour notice?

Artist pursues identity, sustainability in hunt for sea otters

Sitkan Peter Williams is an artist who makes a variety of garments and craft objects from the hides and fur of seals and sea otters -- marine mammals that he hunts himself. But Williams did not grow up hunting. He discovered it as an adult, and discovered himself as he learned how to hunt. According to Smithsonian Magazine, Sitka is one of the top 20 small towns to visit in the United States this year. Sitka came in at No. 9 on the list, just after Los Alamos, N.M., and right before Provincetown, Mass.

‘Choose Respect’ march set for Thursday

Sitka's "Choose Respect" march is set for Thursday, March 28, from Totem Square to the Crescent Harbor shelter.
