Wearable art: ‘Don’t call it a costume’

At a fashion show in Sitka, residents have traded in the usual fabrics for more eccentric media. Maybe it’s a dress that’s all zippers. Or a suit made out of nautical charts. Or a purse composed of bicycle valve stems. In Milan or Paris, this might be called madness. In Sitka, it’s called wearable art.

Lady Wolves, MEHS Braves take 3A crowns

The Sitka High Lady Wolves are this year’s Region V champions in the 3A girls classification. The Mt. Edgecumbe Braves are the boys champions. The two big wins last Friday night (3-8-13) were the climax of nearly a week of basketball in Sitka, as twenty teams competed for berths to the state tournament in Anchorage later this month.

The Sitka Lady Wolves and the Mt. Edgecumbe Braves each defeated their over-the-bridge counterparts to win regional championships in this week's (Mar 5 - 9, 2013) 3A tournament in the BJ McGillis Gym in Sitka. While it's not always fun to lose, winning at the end of a long season could not be sweeter. See the slideshow.

Two teams from Juneau captured regional basketball titles Friday (3-8-13) during the 4A basketball tournament at Sitka's Mt. Edgecumbe High School. Juneau-Douglas took the girls crown; Thunder Mountain won the boys. Good fun and great basketball! View the slideshow.

Sitka, MEHS to rematch in 3A final

As expected, the 3A Region V basketball tournament is an extended version of "The Battle of the Bridge." Sitka and Mt. Edgecumbe girls' and boys' teams will meet Friday to determine who will represent the region at the state tournament in Anchorage.

Man injured at Blue Lake construction site

A man in his mid-50s was seriously injured on Wednesday (3/6/2013) afternoon at the Blue Lake Hydro Expansion project construction site.

Fireweed Dance to perform Saturday

Melinda McAdams, Laura Turcott, and Emma Bruhl with the Fireweed Dance Theatre discuss this weekend's performance (7 PM Sat Mar 9, Sitka Performing Arts Center, tickets $15/$10 at Old Harbor Books and at the door). This year, for the first time, Fireweed has also launched a junior company.
