Amanda Taylor shipwrecked!

Amanda Taylor arrived in Sitka from Minnesota as an Americorp Volunteer. She immediately felt a connection with the community the fit right in working at Braveheart...so she stayed! Candlelight vigil for Mackenzie Howard in Sitka

Sitkans hold a candlelight vigil for Mackenzie Howard of Kake at 6 pm on Fri., Feb. 8, 2013 at the Salvation Army. Alaska State Troopers received a report that the 13-year-old's body had been found shortly before midnight on Tues. State troopers are investigating the case as a homicide. Vigils are being held for Howard across Alaska this evening.

Genetically-modified fish topic of Saturday rally

Sitka Conservation Society community organizer Ray Friedlander, concerned citizen Paul Rioux, and Blatchley Middle School student David Wilcox discuss their concerns with FDA approval process for genetically-modified salmon. A rally is planned tomorrow (Sat Feb 9) at 1 PM in the Crescent Harbor shelter, and in other communities around the state.

Varsity soccer wins funding, but no promises

The Sitka School Board authorized spending $6,000 out of reserves to fund the high school’s co-ed varsity soccer program for the coming spring season. The money was about one-third of that originally requested for the program. Board members consented to the lesser amount with this caveat: Next year, there may be no district funding whatsoever – for soccer or some other popular activities.

Sitka board warned: School vouchers coming

A recent legislative fly-in for the Alaska School Boards Association signaled some changes and challenges in the near future for the state's public schools. According to Sitka school board president Lon Garrison, increased basic funding is a "non-starter" for the new Republican majorities in the legislature. Instead, school vouchers and state-sanctioned charter schools are the new policy direction.
