School board greenlights new votech building

If all goes well, a year from now school district officials in Sitka will cut the ribbon on huge new vocational education building. The Sitka School Board last night (Tue 1-7-14) approved spending $135,000 to begin design of an unusual project at the high school.

Starring: A Russian Orthodox Christmas tradition

It's Christmas today(1-7-14) in Russia, and for many Orthodox Sitkans. Russian Christmas is celebrated according to the old Julian calendar on January 7th, and in Sitka that tradition is audible. The week-long Feast of the Nativity celebration features a nativity "starring" - the Orthodox practice of caroling. Traditionally, revelers would stay out singing until dawn, sometimes for several days in a row.

Pacific High: A (new) century of education in downtown Sitka

Sitka’s Pacific High School students returned from winter break today (1-7-14), to find one last holiday gift: a new school. For the past two years, Pacific High has been housed in the Southeast Alaska Career Center, while the Lincoln Street building was remodeled from the ground up. The state-of-the-art facility has been over a century in the making.

Sitka’s Himschoot wins national teaching prize

A Sitka educator has won a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science. Rebecca Himschoot teaches Science at Keet Gooshi Heen Elementary. She’s one of two Alaskan teachers honored by the White House this year, and one of only 102 teachers nationwide who receive the recognition, which includes a $10,000 cash prize from the National Science Foundation.

Vida Davis, Tlingit culture bearer, dies

Services have been scheduled for Vida Davis, a long time Sitka resident and Native elder. She dedicated much of her life to Tlingit cultural education. Davis died on Wednesday, January 1, in Sitka.
