Switch to Common Core Math delayed until next fall

The Sitka School District’s transition to the new Common Core Math curriculum has fallen behind schedule. Despite an intensive planning schedule in all buildings, program facilitator Lyle Sparrowgrove told the school board Tuesday night (2-4-14) that students won’t see new classroom materials until next fall.

School board urges state to extend investment in local foods

In other business Tuesday night (2-4-14), the Sitka School Board put its weight behind an effort to increase funding for locally-sourced food in schools across the state. In a resolution to the legislature, the board cited the success of Sitka’s Fish to Schools program as justification for extending a similar statewide program beyond one year. Nutritional Alaska Food for Schools was introduced by Anchorage Republican Bill Stoltze in 2012, and piloted last year.

SHS Vocal Jazz warms up this week’s fest

SHS Music director John DePalatis brings his Vocal Jazz Ensemble to the studio: Hallie Bernhoft, Samantha Robinson, Rosie Palof, Destony Rosas, and Cassie Gillespie perform 'Til There Was You from 'The Music Man.' The Sitka JazzFest runs this Thu-Sat, Feb 6-8. Tickets are $10/$25/$45 for an all-Festival pass.

Blatchley health class prompts protests

This month, eighth graders at Blatchley Middle School will see a new class added to their schedule: comprehensive health education, including basic sex ed. The state doesn’t require the class, but educators feel strongly that middle school is the time to address healthy relationships. But some parents object to how the school has handled the program.

Handgun bust leads to drug, weapons charges

Two Sitka men have been indicted on several charges of trafficking in drugs and stolen firearms. A grand jury last Friday (1-31-14) indicted 45 year old Michael Pizarro on one count of Theft in the second degree, one count of Misconduct Involving Weapons in the third degree, and one count of Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance in the second degree. The grand jury indicted 22-year old Samuel Petro on one count of Theft in the second degree.
