Sitka Wolves capture regional basketball crown

The Sitka Wolves have won the Southeast region 3A basketball tournament. The Wolves decisively beat the Mt. Edgecumbe Braves Saturday afternoon, 62 to 45. The game was a rematch between these same two teams from the previous afternoon. In Friday’s contest, Mt. Edgecumbe trailed Sitka by 14 points going into the fourth quarter, but rallied, tied the game with less than a minute to play, and eventually won by 5. Region V Basketball: Mt. Edgecumbe forces Sitka into Saturday playoff

The Mt. Edgecumbe Braves have come out of the loser's bracket to challenge Sitka for the Region V Basketball championship. The Braves defeated the Wolves 66 - 61 in what could have been their last game of the season. Instead, they've forced an "if" game, scheduled for 3:45 PM Saturday (3-8-14). The Braves were saved with less than a minute to play by a player making his first appearance in a varsity game.

Lady Braves take Region V Basketball title

The 3A girls championship was settled earlier this afternoon. The Mt. Edgecumbe Lady Braves defeated defending champions Sitka 49 to 42. The Lady Wolves stayed within striking distance the entire game -- closing to within 3 points with a minute to play -- but could not shut down the Mt. Edgecumbe offense, which has been strong all season. The boys' game got underway moments ago (5:15 PM Thu). View the live stream.

The Sitka School District is drawing on the district's savings account to mitigate its budget deficit. The Ketchikan School District is considering moving to a four-day school week. A Sitka seventh-grader has won the state spelling bee. Sitka Wolves edged out Mt. Edgecumbe in the second round of the Region V basketball tournament in Juneau.

Sitka 7th-grader triumphant at state Spelling Bee

A Sitka seventh-grader has won the state spelling bee. Abigail Fitzgibbon was the Sitka champion last year as a sixth-grader, but was unseated earlier this year in a dazzling spell-off with eighth-grader Kyle Vidad. Fitzgibbon represented Sitka last weekend in Anchorage as a runner up, but nevertheless managed to run away with the state trophy.

Region V Basketball: Sitka Wolves top Braves by one-point

In what might have been one of most tightly-played games between cross-town rivals this season, the Sitka Wolves pulled out a one-point win over the Mt. Edgecumbe Braves, in the second round of the Region V tournament in Juneau today. The final score was 43-42, Sitka. Daily Sitka Sentinel sports editor Tom Hesse is covering the games. He says win came down to the last possession, and it was not Sitka’s size that paid off, as much as their depth.

As seen in our sign on poster designed by Sitka artist Vern Culp, Raven Radio turns 32 years old today. Technically, KCAW went on the air with a limited broadcast schedule at an earlier date, but March 6th is the "official" birthday of Raven Radio. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the ongoing success of our community station since our sign on in 1982 and the years before~!
