Residents kill bear on Granite Creek

A brown bear frequenting trash cans on Granite Creek was shot and killed Tuesday night (4-29-14). According to police dispatch records, a call came in Tuesday evening reporting that someone in the Granite Creek area was shooting at a bear. Police referred the call to Alaska Fish & Wildlife troopers, who responded and found the bear dead in the woods not far from Granite Creek road.

Winter king harvest hits target

Winter troll fishing wraps up tonight at midnight (4-30-14). Fishermen had one of their better recent winter seasons. As of mid-day today (Weds), trollers had landed nearly 47,000 king salmon, far more than the 26,000 landed by this time last year, and well above the 5-year average.

Sitka High School's final music concert is coming up. It's the last one ever for graduating Senior Chaya Pike, as well as Music Director John Depalatis - he's moving to Cairo, Egypt for a job teaching choir at the American International School. They discuss the upcoming concert.

‘Never again’

Monday, April 28th, was Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Yom HaShoah. About thirty people gathered in Sitka’s Totem Square in a light rain as St. Michael’s Cathedral tolled its bells. Residents paid tribute to the victims of the Holocaust, but also remembered more recent genocides, in Cambodia, Rwanda and Bosnia -- and spoke about the struggle to keep the vow that came out of the ashes of World War II: never again.

Planning begins for Sawmill Cove dock

Plans are moving ahead for a multi-purpose dock at Sawmill Cove Industrial Park, but the public can still play a large role in designing the final product. The Sawmill Cove board convened a special meeting last night/Monday night (4-28-14) in Harrigan Centennial Hall to review possible scenarios for the dock, which -- for the moment -- is intended to handle barge traffic.

Barry Allen retires from Sitka PD after 25 years. F/V Mirage is no longer grounded. The Alaska Legislature passed Senate Bill 99 authorizing the city to apply for a low-cost state loan to complete the Blue Lake dam expansion. Wrangell-based representative Peggy Wilson is retiring.

Lieutenant Allen retires from Sitka PD

After over 25 years working for the Sitka Police Department Lieutenant Barry Allen is retiring. He has some anxiety about leaving the community that he loves, but is looking forward to the next stage. Yesterday(4-28-14) was Allen's last day at the Sitka PD.
