My name is Wilbur Brown, Jr.  My Tlingit name is Lkoowagoon.  I am a child of Was’ineidí clan.  I am of the Tsaagweidí (Killer whale) clan.  I am from Aan Yakawlitseixi Hít (The house that anchored the village) clan house.

I’m Wilbur Brown Jr.

I come from Kake, Alaska. Born and raised in a subsistence lifestyle and also commercial fishing lifestyle. In the past, I’ve been a commercial fisherman, a logger, a carpenter, and a true Alaskan guy. Jack of all trades and doing what we have to do to survive. So I understand what it is to be working as an Alaskan to move forward with our lives.

Right now, I come to you to ask for your vote for the Sitka Tribal Council.

I’ve been living in Sitka off and on for the past 17 years. I’ve really been involved in the native community on a lot of issues, from being involved with Alaska Native Brotherhood (ANB) as their Vice President for eight years to being the Chair for Sitka Native Education Program and leaving that in really good standing by the time I had moved out to work for the state.

I’ve served on the Tribal Council the last two years and that was definitely an educational experience for me. So I’ve got a wide variety of knowledge of what’s important to us in our native community and as a tribal council person, I would definitely be a great candidate to best serve you.

One of the pieces of advice I got as I was coming of age in Sitka and working with ANB, Sitka Tribe, and the Sitka Native Education program was that in order to be a leader and to serve, we have to serve first.  So you’ve seen me at a lot of functions serving and just being a part of the community and I hope to continue that. Whether I’m elected or not, I will continue to be involved.

When I was chair of the Family Justice Center and we were able to open up the doors to the Family Justice Center, that was a very huge accomplishment for my last tenure and on this tenure, I’ve been really involved with our health committee, working on our health needs for Sitka. I hope to continue my relationship with SEARHC (SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium) and with the other community organizations to work better for our community.

As a council person, I want to continue our work with tourism and health care needs. They both directly impact jobs in Sitka and I want to see what we can do to best serve you. Our relationship with organizations are primary to moving forward, so I hope to continue that as a Tribal Council member and best serve your needs.

If you have any questions, you can call me at 738-5507.
