Pacific High School students have practiced karate, done somersaults in the air and walked on balance beams — all in the last week.

The school has been holding a “boot camp” of sorts to expose students to different fitness regimes.

Hillary Seeland, who teaches English and social studies, helped coordinate the sessions. She wanted to show her students how different people approach health and wellness in the community, she said.

“It’s hard for students to perform academically if they’re unhealthy physically and mentally,” Seeland said.

Pacific High School doesn’t have a gym. It’s too small. Instead, students complete independent physical education logs or play sports at Sitka High School.

Many community members and organizations came together to offer these experiences to the students, Seeland said, including the Alaska State Troopers, the Coast Guard, Sitka Cirque, the Hames Center and Kronos Titan Ninja Training.
