Diana Dapcevich is one of eight candidates vying for one of two open seats on the Sitka Assembly. Sitka’s municipal election is Tuesday, October 6.

Hello, I am Diana Dapcevich and I am running for assembly.

I was born and raised in Sitka until relocating to Washington State at a young age. I graduated from Western Washington University in 2012 and remained in Washington to work. It wasn’t until January 2016 that I decided to visit Sitka again, and the city’s charm and natural beauty compelled me to stay.

The history, culture and natural beauty of this city are part of what defines Sitka. Protecting and promoting these aspects help strengthen our community and drive our economy. Sitka has incredible potential to be an affordable, welcoming place for everyone to work and enjoy life. While our city has had some hurdles, we now find ourselves in a moment of heightened economic and social challenges that require a fresh perspective.

For the past four years, I have been working at Dapcevich Accounting Service. My position requires endless studying of the laws that change, and asking the right questions to find solutions for each client. What I enjoy most about my job is being able to connect with Sitkans from all different parts of the community and serve them to the best of my ability. My job has offered me a way of gaining insight into the way people live and work in Sitka, their struggles and their values. It is because of the people of Sitka that I am truly invested in the service of this community.

Undoubtedly, many Sitkans are experiencing hardship due to a high cost of living. Affordability is a challenge that requires multiple approaches and collaborative efforts. Housing has become increasingly difficult to rent or own, which is why securing long term housing availability and affordability is necessary for the future of the city. In addition to strategies addressing the high cost of housing, efforts that increase wages and attract/retain higher-wage employment will also increase Sitka’s affordability.

Also critical to Sitka’s future is implementing immediate solutions to the challenges currently faced by business owners and their employees. Workforce development, investment in infrastructure, and providing additional resources for business owners will be important as we provide policies that promote commerce and job growth.

As a member of your assembly, I will focus on measurable and achievable results that help make Sitka more affordable for its year round residents, encourage commerce, protect natural and historical resources, and promote public health. By keeping the community informed and engaging with citizens from all walks of life, I commit to serving to make Sitka a place for everyone. My name is Diana Dapcevich and I thank you for your support!
