A magnitude 5.9 earthquake rippled through Southeast Alaska at approximately 10:46 p.m. Thursday night (1-11-24), rattling shelves and waking up Sitkans. The U.S. Tsunami Warning Center has issued no tsunami watch or advisory for the quake, which was located offshore 83 miles south of Sitka, at a depth of 4 miles.

Note: On January 12, the USGS refined the location of the quake. The epicenter was 50 miles southwest of Sitka, at a depth of 12 miles.
