74 participate in first Blue Lake dam tour

Construction is underway on the Blue Lake dam expansion. The hydro project is one of two supplying power to Sitka, and raising the dam by 83 feet is the largest public works project in Sitka history. On Sunday, the city led the first public tour of the construction site.

Aerial survey finds predators, no herring

That’s the report from the first aerial survey of the 2013 herring season in Sitka Sound. Alaska Department of Fish & Game officials found 24 whales in the Sound, mostly between Kruzof Island and Crow Island, and offshore of north Middle Island.

Assembly hot and cold on Sea Walk, harbor grants

At its regular meeting Tuesday night, the Assembly approved a contractor to build the Sitka Sea Walk, but voted down a proposal to set aside $48,000 a year to maintain (and eventually replace) it. Separately, it gave the green light to the Sitka Harbor Department to apply for one grant, and unanimously rejected another.
