Sitka campus gets $500K from Alabama donor

Carol Odess made the donation in support of Allen Memorial Hall, on the Sheldon Jackson campus. The building holds a number of dance studios and an auditorium. The building will keep its name, but the theater inside will be named in honor of Odess and her late husband, Jack.

Photographer to discuss Mideast ‘hydropolitics’

A photographer who has chronicled the Israel-Palestine conflict since 2003 arrives in Sitka this weekend. Skip Schiel calls himself a "participatory photographer."

On Tuesday morning, just before 9 a.m., the Celebrity Century became the first cruise ship to dock at Old Sitka, about five miles north of downtown Sitka. The private dock, installed by Halibut Point Marine, is vying for cruise traffic. Vessels in Sitka usually anchor just south of downtown and bring their passengers to shore in smaller vessels.

Sitka adds teacher to keep ‘K’ classes small

Baranof Elementary School has more kindergarteners than it planned for this year. As a result, Sitka School District officials added an extra teacher, just five days before the start of school. They say the scramble was worth it, as the first days of school are among the most important in a student’s education.

Motorist hospitalized after hitting tree on HPR
