Baby found in Sitka sink returns as adult

On a winter night in 1994, a newborn baby was found lying in a sink at Sitka’s Thomsen Harbor. Eighteen years later, that girl is now a young woman named Karissa Amrhein. She graduated from high school this spring and last week, she returned to Sitka.

Self-insured Sitkans hail Supreme Court decision

The Supreme Court's decision was hailed by some residents. Many fishing families in Sitka are self-employed and therefore self-insured. It’s expensive, with annual premiums into the thousands. Wendy Alderson's family is a good illustration.

Whereas, Raven Radio rocks!

The Sitka Assembly recognized Raven Radio's 30th anniversary this Tuesday (6-26-12) with an official proclamation. The document cites the station's news services to Sitka and surrounding communities, live assembly broadcasts, and "variety of music styles and entertainment for all Sitkans." General manager Ken Fate accepted the proclamation on behalf of the station, along with his three predecessors. In his remarks, Fate outlined all that the station has accomplished for Sitka over the past three decades -- and all the accomplishments to come!

Assembly advances new electric rates, auto tax

Electrical customers in Sitka could soon pay more, although some might see a decrease in their bill. It's part of an effort to encourage conservation. Also last night: A motor vehicle tax moved forward, and an increase to the sales tax cap was finalized.

Assembly to consider adding vehicle tax

For the average family vehicle, it would be an additional $200 every two years. Commercial vehicles would pay $400 every two years. For non-commercial trailers, it’s $100, and motorcycles are $50.

Dead sea lion studied near downtown Sitka

The animal was found dead Tuesday near the Channel Club. Volunteers towed it to the ramp on Japonski Island. Juneau veterinarian Rachel Berngartt says it had a flasher in its mouth and fishing line down its throat, with a hook through its esophagus.

Boardwalk nap

Tommy Joseph saw this brown bear on the boardwalk at Starrigavan Estuary, north of Sitka, on Sunday. "After grazing in the estuary for a good while he climbed on to the boardwalk and rubbed against a signpost, then took about a half an hour nap," Joseph said.

Arts camp grant about more than campus

The $350,000 grant comes from a national program called “Artplace.” The Chicago-based group is funded by a dozen or so of the nation’s largest private foundations. It sends money to groups it feels are not only developing a particular project, but are also improving their overall the community.
