School board approves varsity soccer

High school soccer teams around Southeast will soon take on varsity squads from Sitka. The school board approved varsity boys and girls teams for next year at its meeting last Thursday night. Now they just have to figure out how to pay for it.

Bethel judge becomes Sitka magistrate

Bethel Superior Court Judge Leonard Devaney starts work in Sitka on July 2. Devaney comes into the job after the death last January of Magistrate Bruce Horton. In the time since Horton’s passing, the Sitka court has been served by substitute magistrates from around Southeast.

State to reconsider Warm Springs hatchery

Juneau resident Dale Young wants to start a hatchery near Baranof Warm Springs. He was denied last year because he didn’t have a water-use permit. When he later obtained one, state officials agreed to reconsider his request for the hatchery.
