Remembering Balloo: Sitka’s Fortress mourns rescue bear

One of the rescue animals at Sitka’s Fortress of the Bear was euthanized on Thursday (10-19-17). Balloo was a seven-year-old brown bear and had lost mobility in his back legs. He lived the entirety of his adult life at the educational rescue center.

Alaska Day soundtrack includes pipes and drums

The Seattle Firefighters Pipes and Drums group has been flying to Sitka to take commemorate Alaska Day for over a decade. Their trip is covered by locals and they lend a lot of ceremony to the occasion.

Different lineup for Alaska Day parade

Due to ongoing construction on Lake Street, the lineup for Wednesday’s (10-18-17) Alaska Day parade has changed. The Sitka Police Department has instructed marchers to line up along Oja Way and Monastery Street, down to Lincoln Street.

With new Sitka Assembly comes new roles, responsibilities

On Tuesday night (10-10-17), the Sitka Assembly certified the results of last week's election, offered thanks to outgoing members, and swore in new members. They appointed Steven Eisenbeisz as Deputy Mayor and Bob Potrzuski as Deputy-Vice Mayor.

Tlingit tribes and clans gather in Sitka for biennial conference

Sitka will host a biennial conference of Tlingit Tribes and Clans on the Sheldon Jackson Campus from October 13th to October 17th. The symposium brings together indigenous peoples across Southeast Alaska and their Canadian relatives.

Without Assembly support, Land Trust to look elsewhere for soil clean-up costs

After a tense debate and a close 4-3 vote, the Assembly denied a request from the Sitka Community Land Trust (SCLT) for financial assistance to clean up contaminated soil. The pollution was uncovered after breaking ground on an affordable housing project.

New Assembly members to be sworn in

One week after the municipal election, the results will be certified during the Assembly meeting tonight (10-10-17). Richard Wein, Steven Eisenbeisz, and Ben Miyasato will be sworn in.

Yacht runs aground during weekend high tide

A yacht ran aground in Sitka on Saturday (10-07-17) during the highest tide of the month, spilling an estimated 5 to 15 gallons of diesel near Middle Island.
