Herring spawn spotty, totals 57 nautical miles

The Sitka Sound herring continue to spawn, though in spots rather than long stretches of coastline. The Alaska Department of Fish & Game is conducting daily aerial surveys. The cumulative spawn mileage to date is 57 nautical miles.

Salmon viewing bridge undergoes replacement

A popular bridge for salmon viewing is getting a makeover and will be closed for the summer. The Sitka National Historical Park is replacing the footbridge over Indian River that links the east and west sections of the park to pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

Buddy system carries Sitkans to Boston Marathon

Sitkans Ryan Carpenter and Chris McGraw are running the Boston Marathon on April 17th and preparing for the Chicago Marathon on October 8th. They spoke with KCAW before departing, about what it's like to train for a 26.2 mile race on 14 miles of road.
