U.S. Coast Guard rescues 7 and dog stranded on sandbar near Haines

On Saturday, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew from Air Station Sitka rescued seven people and a dog near Haines after their boat capsized in the Chilkat River. That’s according to a press release from the 17th District Coast Guard.

STA requests state Supreme Court reversal on injunction denial

Last month, a Juneau judge denied Sitka Tribe of Alaska's request for an injunction that would have required the Alaska Department of Fish and game to develop new procedures in the lead up to the Sitka Sac Roe herring fishery. In response, STA filed a petition to the Alaska Supreme Court to reverse that decision last Thursday, Feb. 28.

SEARHC donates $25,000 to SCLT affordable housing project

The Sitka Community Land Trust received a $25,000 dollar donation from SEARHC Saturday to go toward the development of new affordable housing on Halibut Point Road. The Old City Shops lot has been set aside by the City of Sitka for the development of seven cottages.

Ed Littlefield teaches Keet kids storytelling through sound

Tlingit musician Ed Littlefield is renowned for his work as a musician and percussionist, having played in symphonies, jazz orchestras and other professional groups in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. Most recently, he came to Sitka to play in the Sitka Jazz Festival.
