High turbidity causes Blue Lake water shut off Sunday

Turbidity is caused by tiny particles that are suspended in water and can carry pathogens past ultraviolet treatment systems. The federal Environmental Protection Agency requires turbidity to be low in water drawn from systems considered to have a very high purity.

Law enforcement graduates headed for posts across Alaska

37 law enforcement officers graduated from the Public Safety Training Academy in Sitka today in a  ceremony at Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi. They spent 16 weeks training and will serve in communities throughout Alaska. KCAW’s Enrique Pérez de la Rosa attended the  ceremony and provides this postcard.

KathyHope Erickson wins reelection as STA council chair

Unofficial results following balloting Tuesday, Nov. 14 put the incumbent Erickson two votes ahead of runner-up Woody Widmark, 80-78. Widmark has previously served 20 years as chair. Tribal citizens cast a total of 167 ballots in races for Tribal Chair and for four Tribal Council seats.

Kathryn arrived in Sitka about a month ago. She said she’s been working on getting her sea legs at the library and supporting library staff in doing their jobs. As more ballots are counted, Kreiss-Tomkins opens lead in House race

The results of the House District 35 race were delayed on election night due to a technical issue in voting across Southeast. But election returns are finally in for Sitka, Petersburg and other communities affected by the malfunction. As of 3 p.m. Thursday, Democratic incumbent Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins leads Republican challenger Richard Wein by almost 670 votes with 85 percent of precincts reporting.

Geophysicist visits Sitka, learns to talk shop

Dr. Rachel Lauer is an assistant professor at the University of Calgary in the geophysics program that conducts research around the forces at play during earthquakes and tectonic plate movements. Her research focuses on the processes that move and produce fluids below the sea floor, especially near faults like the Queen Charlotte system.

New Mayor, Assembly members sworn in in Yakutat

A new mayor was sworn in in Yakutat last night. Lowell Petersen was elected mayor with 121 votes in the October 16 election. That’s 15 more than outgoing incumbent Ralph Wolfe. Yakutat residents also voted out incumbents Herbert Holcomb and Paul Harding from the Yakutat Borough Assembly.

Yakutat carver honors grandfather, coffee in first totem pole

Tlingit artist Alison Marks raised her first totem pole on Saturday in Yakutat, which she carved in memory of her grandfather. She’s one of only a handful of Native women who carve totem poles. Alison Marks was “very aware” when she started carving a totem pole to honor her grandfather that this isn’t a job typically done by Tlingit women.
