Got fish? Donation program connects Sitkans with seafood during pandemic

Linda Behnken is the director of the Alaska Longline Fishermen's Association. ALFA, and its community-supported fishery, Alaska's Own, is starting a seafood donation program to aid Sitkans in need. Herring spawn enters the digital age with interactive mapping

The Alaska Department of Fish & Game has developed a pair of interactive tools to help the public stay on top of where herring are spawning in Sitka Sound. The "Sitka Sound Daily Herring Spawn" is a step up from the diagrams that the department has published in the past. The "Sitka Sound Herring Survey" identifies where the major predator groups (whales and sea lions) are congregating, and shows the gps track of the ADF&G aerial survey.

Sitka legislator teams up to develop national coronavirus model

Sitka Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins has partnered with a group of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs -- including Google executive Max Henderson -- to develop a new website, covidactnow.org. In a very short time, the site has influenced policy-makers across the country, as they impose stricter measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

Homeowner extinguishes bathroom blaze

Sitka firefighters responded to a small fire in a home bathroom on Monday afternoon (3-23-20). Chief engineer Craig Warren says the firehall received the call at 4:35 P.M. on Monday that a wastebasket was on fire in the bathroom of an upstairs apartment on Edgecumbe Drive. By the time firefighters had arrived on scene, the homeowner had contained the fire with a chemical extinguisher.

Last Sunday (3-22-20) the City of Sitka issued a strong recommendation that Sitkans "Shelter in Place." Similar recommendations -- and in some places, mandates -- are happening all over the country.
