A local nonprofit in Sitka is picking up the slack in the wake of the mass federal firings that began a couple of weeks ago. Sitka Trail Works hopes to put at least four of the five members of the Sitka Ranger District’s cabin and trail crew back to work this season. A fundraising campaign has already generated over $100,000.

SOUL group submits signatures for special election

Organizers of an initiative to limit cruise tourism in Sitka say they have enough signatures to take the question to a special election this spring. The group, Small Town SOUL, turned over its petition with over 700 signatures to city hall on Friday (2-28-25).

The board of Sitka’s industrial park is postponing a decision about placing the city’s new marine haulout under private management, after continued backlash from the public. At least forty people turned out to Wednesday’s (2-26-25) meeting of the board to register their objections to a proposal from Highmark Marine of Kodiak to operate the facility rent-free.
