In a difficult year, Sitkans lose connectivity and find connection

2024 was an especially challenging year for Sitka. The community coped with tragedies, school layoffs, a low salmon harvest, and no internet for 16 days. But somehow Sitka came together and pulled through. Call it resiliency – or muscle memory – but when things are difficult, Sitkans manage to find their way home.

A few tickets are still available for this weekend’s annual ‘Holiday Brass’ concert

On December 21st, the Sitka Fine Arts Camp continues its beloved tradition with Holiday Brass. Featuring a lineup of local and nationally acclaimed musicians, the performance at the Sitka Performing Arts Center will include a mix of classical and holiday pieces. Roger Schmidt and Lily Perez joined KCAW for the Morning Interview to discuss the event. UPDATE: Two bodies believed to be Wind Walker crew located near Hoonah

Alaska Wildlife Troopers from Juneau and Hoonah responded to a call that human remains were located in Spasski Bay, about four miles east of Hoonah. Two bodies were recovered and flown to Juneau aboard an Alaska National Guard helicopter. Both were subsequently transported to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Anchorage for positive identification.
