At the Cape Edgecumbe weather buoy, March sails out like a lamb

After a "lionish" month of stormy weather, with strong gales and high seas occasionally topping 20 feet, the last day of March, 2022, dawned quite peacefully off the coast of Southeast Alaska near Sitka. The 86084 Cape Edgecumbe weather buoy automatically captured this image at sunrise on March 31. The buoy is moored approximately 20 miles west of Necker Bay, and is an essential resource for the Southeast fishing fleet, and recreational vessels alike.

Sitka herring harvest nearing 10k tons, as spawning tops 15 miles

The Alaska Department of Fish & Game estimates that seiners had landed about 9,000 tons through Wednesday, March 30. On Thursday seine nets were in the water from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with no estimate yet of the amount of herring caught. Active spawning is now visible along 15.6 miles of shoreline.

Friends of SJ Museum host annual silent auction this Saturday

The Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum is holding its annual Silent Auction in support of its Native Artist Residency Program, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at the Unitarian Universalist Hall (parking in rear of building). Friends president Rosemary Carlton and staff member Laura Bennett discuss the program, and its importance to the Sheldon Jackson Museum.
