Rob Harcourt: Where the wild things swim

Rob Harcourt is a professor of Marine Ecology at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. He's in Sitka as a Scientist in Residency Fellow (SIRF) at the Sitka Sound Science Center. Harcourt uses advanced tagging techniques to study ocean animals and their habitat -- everything from jellyfish to blue whales. He'll be speaking tonight (6PM Wed Apr 22, Alaska Raptor Rehabilitation Center, free) on climate change and penquins: "Will Happy Feet feel the heat?" Coast Guard and SAR training together

Pete Melnick, the Operations Officer of Coast Guard Air Station Sitka, and Lance Ewers, the volunteer captain of Search and Rescue (SAR), share plans by to conduct a joint training operation this weekend and ongoing recruiting efforts. PSP Part 2: With new lab, STA takes a gamble on shellfish testing

Despite the risk of paralytic shellfish poisoning -- or PSP -- Southeast Alaska has a robust dive fishery that includes geoduck clams. The entire industry hinges on weekly testing results from the Department of Environmental Conservation laboratory in Anchorage. This scenario could change in the not-too-distant future, as Sitka Tribe of Alaska seeks to open an independent testing lab for Southeast.
