Senators propose cuts to domestic violence prevention

Last week (Thursday, 3-26-15), a Senate subcommittee proposed zeroing out all funding for domestic violence and sexual assault prevention programs across the state. Among the organizations that would be affected is Sitkans Against Family Violence (SAFV) Sitka’s women’s shelter, which also leads prevention programs for teens and kids.

Marijuana Town Hall to be a ‘circle of reasonableness’

Doug Osborne, Director of Health Promotion at Sitka Community Hospital, describes his plans for Marijuana Town Hall II (6:30 - 8 PM Mon Mar 30, Harrigan Centennial Hall). Osborne hopes the meeting/discussion helps clear up misinformation about the use of marijuana, and serves as a vehicle for "reasonable conversation" about the newly-legalized drug.Downloadable audio.

Youth activists march for respectful, non-violent relationships

Sitka was one of 170 communities that took to the streets today for the Choose Respect March, a statewide effort to end domestic violence and sexual assault. In a 2012 victimization survey conducted in Sitka, 47% of adult women reported experiencing intimate partner violence, sexual violence, or both.

‘Relay for Life’ supports cancer survivors, honors loss

Ellen Ruhle is a two-time cancer survivor and event chair for the 3rd Annual Relay for Life (8PM Fri June 19 - 4 PM Sat June 20, Lower Moller Field). Teams of up to 12 people keep a runner/walker on the track for the entire duration of the event, which honors cancer patients and caregivers. Participants can register online, or sign up at this spring's "Sitka Sue Walk" (8:30 AM Sat Apr 25, Rocky Gutierrez Airport). Postcard from Herring Camp: Walking in both worlds

As a host of herring arrived in Sitka Sound last week, another school clamored to be out on water. Nineteen students spent their Spring Break at the Knowledge of Herring Camp - a 5-day program that taught students both the cultural and ecological significance of this critical resource.
