A new forecast says current plans for logging younger Tongass trees will not provide enough wood to maintain the region’s timber industry. But a more aggressive approach might.

Mountain film festival stops in Sitka

Cindy Edwards was part of the selection committee for the BANFF Mountain Film Festival World Tour, which is stopping in Sitka to showcase a selection of mountain and outdoors-based adventure films. Edwards talked about how themes of perseverance and the human spirit drive many of the films, shot all over the world with topics such as rock climbing, BASE jumping, and tight rope walking. Ocean-themed garments for Wearable Arts Runway Show

Jeff Budd and Sawrie with the Great Sitka Arts Council talk about plans for the 7th Annual Wearable Arts Runway Show & Extravaganza. The theme is Seven Seas, Clean Seas. ‘Lost Goddess’ a story told in dance, prose, and theater

Dancer/choreographer Laura Careless debuts her solo piece, The Lost Goddess Dance, tonight (7 PM, Wed Feb 18, Sitka Performing Arts Center). Careless has taught dance at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp over the last three summers. She began to develop material for the piece, which is base on the Persephone myth, while in Sitka. Discovery Week: Marching alongside the spirit of Elizabeth Peratrovich

Elizabeth Peratrovich attended Sheldon Jackson School as a teenager in Sitka and on Monday (2-16-15)-- not far from campus -- a parade marched from Crescent Harbor Shelter to ANB Hall in her honor. As part of Discover Your Potential Week at Blatchley Middle School, students in the radio class interviewed marchers at the starting line.

Sitka board urges state to maintain Mt. Edgecumbe HS funding

The Sitka School District has gone on record in support of continued funding for Mt. Edgecumbe High School, but has no interest in taking the institution off of the state’s hands.

Blue Lake Dam: Sitka’s ‘cut the fat hog’

The Blue Lake Dam site reopened to public access over the weekend (2-14-15), but there isn't much to see. Almost all of the additional 83-feet of dam height is underwater, thanks to an exceptionally wet winter.

Vikings storm Sitka
