The battle over education funding in Alaska this year may have an unexpected casualty. This Tuesday (2-10-15), the House Education Finance Subcommittee began a conversation about ongoing state funding for Mt. Edgecumbe High School in Sitka.

Heritage society pairs maritime stories with old photographs

For their annual meeting on February 19th, the Sitka Maritime Heritage Society is inviting members of the public to share their photographs and stories of waterfront history. Rebecca Poulson and Joe D'Arienzo, the vice-president and treasurer of the society, talked about the inspiration for the exhibit, while moderator Eric Jordan shared tales of growing up on a boat. He brought in a 1952 photograph, complete with the family laundry hanging off the boat, named the Salty. D'Arienzo provided an update about the restoration of the Japonski Island Boathouse for historic boat work. Downloadable audio.

SCH creates scholarship swimming lesson program

Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield gave Sitka Community Hospital a $3000 grant for water safety education. As Patrick Williams of SCH explains it, $1500 will be funneled into a 12-month scholarship program directed by Baranof Barracuda Swim Club to teach six children how to swim. Williams was joined by Coach Sioxha Tokman and Board President Kevin Knox to talk about the expansion of the swim lesson program and the upcoming state championship meet in Jueanu. All aboard the Hogwarts Express

Last Thursday (2-5-15), staff of the Kettleson Memorial Library transformed the Stratton location into the Hogwarts castle, complete with floating candlesticks, owls, and of course, a competition for the House Cup. The publisher Bloomsbury Children's Books declared February 5th the first "Harry Potter Book Night," an annual event to celebrate the series.
