Nomination close Friday for BP Teachers of Excellence

Tara Stevens, Associate Director for Government & Public Affairs with BP, discusses the company's teacher recognition program, BP Teachers of Excellence. Nominations are open through Friday, Januar 30. Nomination forms can be found online here. There have been two recent Sitka winners, Christy Anderson (2014) and Michael Mahoney (2012), both from Mt. Edgecumbe High School. Stevens is hoping to see more nominations from Sitka this year. Thirty-three teachers will be recognized in the 20th anniversary year of the program. Downloadable audio.

‘DUCKumentary’ kicks off park’s environmental film series

Sitka National Historical Park ranger Ryan Carpenter, the Sitka Conservation Society's Mary Wood, and the Sitka Sound Science Center's Ashley Bolwerk are collaborating on a winter film series at the park. The first screening, DUCKumentary, is tonight (7 PM Wed Jan 28 and 2 PM Sat Jan 31, SNHP theater, free admission). Carpenter says Sitka's waterfowl are some of the most beautiful anywhere, and they live fascinating lives. Downloadable audio.

Story Lab unleashes creative energy of kids

Sally Helm, a Sitka Service Fellow with the Island Institute, describes Story Lab, a new literary program for kids ages 7-19. There are four parts to the program: Afterschool, with weekly sessions; Saturday workshops; In-school, where Helm visits classrooms; and a publishing component. Story Lab is happening now. Sitka bike rider medevacked after collision with truck

A Sitka High School freshman was medevacked to Harborview Hospital in Seattle after being struck by a vehicle Friday evening (1-23-15). 15-year old Cody Bergman is in stable condition, according to close family friends, and he is responsive. However, doctors are keeping him sedated while they assess the extent of his injuries.
