Assembly to fill vacancy today at 5:30 PM

Four Sitkans have applied to fill the assembly seat vacated last month by Phyllis Hackett. The assembly will hold a special meeting Friday evening (1-2-15) at 5:30 PM in Harrigan Centennial Hall to select someone to serve the remaining 10 months of Phyllis Hackett’s term. Note: the meeting time was erroneously listed as 6pm in previous reports.

Video: Two rescued in skiff grounding at Kanga Bay

The Coast Guard rescued a man and woman after their 17-foot skiff ran aground in Kanga Bay near Sitka on Saturday (12-27-14). The Sitka Fire Department relayed information from a 9-1-1 call to the Coast Guard, that a man and woman had been thrown out of a skiff when it struck the shore Saturday evening. The man reportedly had suffered injuries to his head and face in the spill.

The community has wrestled for years with how to pay to replace pavement put down during the heyday of the state’s oil wealth in the 1980s. And so far, no one’s come up with a plan for local funding that’s acceptable to residents.

If you’ve got Holiday Fever, Sitka’s National Honor Society has a remedy for you: An icy cold dip in the ocean. Several dozen die-hard Sitkans turned out on a cold, wet solstice weekend (12-20-14) to cool their heels – and many other body parts – in the community’s annual Polar Dip.
