‘Boys Run’ hopes to emulate success of ‘Girls’

Elena Gustafson, with Sitkans Against Family Violence, talks about a new program for boys in grades through 3-5 called Boys Run. It's based on the successful national self-esteem and empowerment program for girls called Girls on the Run. Boys Run, however, will be built on traditional Southeast values.

Boater missing near Cross Sound is found, rescued

A boater who went missing near Cross Sound on Thursday (8-7-14) was found and rescued after a 24-hour, multi-agency search. The US Coast Guard and US Forest Service found 21-year-old Gus McConnell on the north side of Hogan Island, in the mouth of Portlock Harbor, about 55 miles northwest of Sitka.

Seven candidates to vie for Sitka assembly

Four more candidates have thrown their hats in the ring for municipal office in Sitka. Steven Eisenbeisz, who ran last year as a write-in candidate, filed for assembly about 90 minutes before today’s deadline. He missed winning a seat in that election by only 56 votes. Two other candidates, Lillian Feldpausch and Thor Christianson also filed just under the wire. Orion Hughes-Knowles will challenge incumbent Mim McConnell for the mayor's seat.
