Father-son team at halfway mark ‘Running the Country’

Most people will never run 1,700 miles in their lives. Brett and David Wilcox have run 1,700 miles since January, and they still have a long way to go. The father-son team from Sitka is running across the country to raise awareness about genetically-modified-organisms -- or GMO’s -- prevalent in the American diet. The runners are in Parsons, Kansas, a little beyond the halfway point of their journey from Huntington Beach, California, to Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Quilt show to open at Harrigan Hall

Jan Lovett and Sarah Jordan, with the Ocean Wave Quilters Guild, discuss their annual show, which runs May 5 - 17 at Harrigan Centennial Hall. The Guild has granted over $40,000 in scholarships as a result of its fund raising efforts in recent years.

Residents kill bear on Granite Creek

A brown bear frequenting trash cans on Granite Creek was shot and killed Tuesday night (4-29-14). According to police dispatch records, a call came in Tuesday evening reporting that someone in the Granite Creek area was shooting at a bear. Police referred the call to Alaska Fish & Wildlife troopers, who responded and found the bear dead in the woods not far from Granite Creek road.

Winter king harvest hits target

Winter troll fishing wraps up tonight at midnight (4-30-14). Fishermen had one of their better recent winter seasons. As of mid-day today (Weds), trollers had landed nearly 47,000 king salmon, far more than the 26,000 landed by this time last year, and well above the 5-year average.

Planning begins for Sawmill Cove dock

Plans are moving ahead for a multi-purpose dock at Sawmill Cove Industrial Park, but the public can still play a large role in designing the final product. The Sawmill Cove board convened a special meeting last night/Monday night (4-28-14) in Harrigan Centennial Hall to review possible scenarios for the dock, which -- for the moment -- is intended to handle barge traffic.
