Sitka moorage hike to take effect Jan 1

Moorage rates in Sitka’s harbors are going up next week. The Sitka assembly last night (Mon 12-23-13) approved the rate hike on second reading, bumping the per-foot monthly charge for permanent berths from $2.64 to $2.80, an increase of a little over 6-percent effective New Year's Day.

The Sitka Assembly will vote on whether to increase moorage fees at Sitka harbors. Former Haines Representative Bill Thomas has filed a letter of intent to run for state office in 2014.

ANB Harbor replacement moves forward

Work began on Sitka’s ANB Harbor in November. The $7.7 million project will demolish the existing structures and replace them with new floats and pilings by early spring. But a small invader in the harbor has added a wrinkle to the usual process.

SEDA’s strategy: support large vessels, attract outside dollars

At Wednesday’s Chamber of Commerce luncheon, Garry White, Executive Director of the Sitka Economic Development Association, or SEDA, discussed plans to make Sawmill Cove Industrial Park more accessible to larger vessels. A step that could bring much needed outside dollars to Sitka.

Two Sitka hunters injured as boat strikes cliff

Two Sitka hunters sustained serious injuries Tuesday evening (12-17-13), after their boat struck a cliff in Kakul Narrows, about 25 miles north of town. 34-year old Nick Galanin is being treated for spinal fractures at SEARHC's Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital in Sitka. 37-year old Mitch McGraw was medevacked to Seattle.
