Sitka urges governor to accept Obama’s Medicaid plan

The City of Sitka wants the governor to get off the fence about Medicaid. The Sitka assembly Tuesday night (11-12-13) passed a resolution asking Governor Parnell and the state legislature to “fully consider” the benefits to Alaskan communities of expanding Medicaid to cover a larger share of the state’s poorest residents.

His music selection is diverse as well. NEAR_and_DEER_feaFew things warm the hearts of Sitka's hunters like coming across a nice, fat buck in peak condition. Few things cool their enthusiasm like discovering a big brownie got there first! Hugh Bevan set up this trailcam "a couple of miles" from the beach on Kruzof Is. near Sitka. These two images (buck, then bear) were captured on October 18 and November 5 respectively. While the bear doesn't look like she could hold another bite after the summer's record salmon run, there's no doubt that she's interested!

Gamble wants to preserve cultural identity

Tom Gamble is one of six candidates for Sitka Tribe of Alaska Tribal Council. He has already served on the council – once in 2004 and then again in 2008. If elected, Gamble wants to focus his term on preserving cultural identity.

Skipper honored for role in Icy Strait rescue

The US Coast Guard awarded one of its highest civilian honors to a Sitka fisherman whose quick thinking likely saved the life of a fellow mariner last summer. John Hagen was presented with the Public Service Commendation in a ceremony at Air Station Sitka Thursday morning (11-7-13), as the station’s pilots and officers stood by in full dress uniform.
