miyasato mug feaBen Miyasato is one of six candidates for Sitka Tribe of Alaska Tribal Council. He just finished a two-year term as Tribal Vice Chairman and is running for reelection. Miyasato wants the council to focus on tribal finances, and take into account the possibility of another government shutdown.

Over it’s 17-year run, Sitka’s WhaleFest has evolved from a tourist event into a research and cultural conference on a wide range of Arctic and marine mammals issues. There is also a large educational component, as visiting scientists spend considerable time in local classrooms. MEHS Wrestling builds family

Mt. Edgecumbe High School Wrestling coach Mike Kimber says it takes a while, but his team eventually comes together as a family. This year, 20 of his 60 athletes are girls. He's hoping to establish a girls' season in the future. With KCAW's Brian Hanson.

Board adopts Common Core for English Language Arts studies

The Sitka School Board on Monday night adopted a new English Language Arts curriculum for the district, beginning next school year. The so-called ELA is designed to prepare students to meet new standards developed by the state Department of Education. Alaska’s standards are closely aligned with national standards adopted by 45 other states, and usually referred to as “Common Core.”
