Horse racing, fishing, and other labors of love

Marjorie Sa'adah A writer working on a non-fiction book about horse racing is spending 8 weeks in Sitka doing research. Marjorie Gellhorn Sa’adah is the Island Institute's first Rasmuson Artist-in-Residence. Her book At Home in the Going documents the lives of the itinerant workers who care for race tracks. She stopped by KCAW and talked with Robert Woolsey about what she’s learned in Sitka to help her with her story.

Assembly forum recap: Candidates look for fresh ideas

Sitka voters will select two new Assembly members on October 1st. Late last week, the three people who want those jobs made their pitch to the public. Aaron Swanson, Ben Miyasato, and Steven Eisenbeisz took questions during KCAW’s live on-air forum Thursday night (9-26-13). They heard from a wide range of callers, including skeptical voters and one woman who identified herself as “Granny Goose.”

XCountry champ!

Sitka High Boys extended their dominance in Cross Country by winning the Regional 1A/2A/3A Meet Saturday morning (9-28-13) in Sitka. Freshman David Wilcox broke the tape in 17:37 for the 5K event, helping his team to an overall first in the meet. Mt. Edgecumbe, Wrangell, and Skagway rounded out the field.
