Poetry is at the top of Ann Staley’s list

Forty years ago, poet Ann Staley bought her first piece of artwork in Ashland, Oregon. It was a watercolor painting of a tree by Norm Campbell. Staley and Campbell have maintained a long friendship ever since. Over the next several weeks, the pair will collaborate on art and poetry in a new residency program developed by Sitka’s Island Institute. She stopped by recently to talk about how a poet and a painter collaborate. She spoke with KCAW’s Robert Woolsey.

‘Beatrix Potter’ to revive musicals in Odess Theater

The newly-remodeled Odess Theater is going to stage its first musical in decades this fall. The Sitka Fine Arts Camp has launched a new program called the “Young Performer’s Theater.” Auditions will be held Saturday (9-21-13) for the company’s first show: “The Adventures of Beatrix Potter and Her Friends.”

Garrison a watchdog for public schools

Garrison_100School board president Lon Garrison has served two terms overseeing Sitka’s schools; this October he’ll ask voters for a third. Garrison, like many board members, was first elected when his kids were in school. Now that his daughters have graduated, he says he’s following his passion, and using experience in policy and legislative advocacy to make a good school district even better.

Examining the effects of yellow cedar decline

Lauren Oakes is a Ph.D. candidate at Stanford University. She’s spent the past two years studying yellow cedar decline in the Tongass. Oakes is not trying to learn why yellow cedar are dying -- that’s already been attributed to climate change. Rather, she and her team are studying what’s next: How will the forest plant community be affected by the loss of cedar trees? How will their loss affect us?

The two candidates for Sitka’s school board this year agree on much, but also have one key difference: How they view the role of the superintendent.
