In water, forest, and lab Stanford ‘SoCo’ examines Alaska’s natural systems

Twelve sophomores from Stanford University are in Sitka this month for a 3-week field course studying human and natural systems in Southeast Alaska. The course is taught by a combination of four graduate instructors, visiting Stanford professors, and local experts. It’s called a “SoCo” -- or Sophomore College. SoCo teaching assistant Caitlin Woolsey sent this audio postcard from what is proving to be a hands-on adventure in higher education.

Preschool with hard name to ease students’ entry into kindergarten

A new preschool is opening in Sitka this fall, with the aim of closing the gap in achievement for low-income students. The preschool will be housed in Baranof Elementary, and will help transition three-year-olds from the existing Head Start program into kindergarten. Members of the team collaborating on Wooch.ein Yei Jigahxtoonei outlined their plans for the Sitka School Board this week (9-10-13).

Sitka’s Cross Trail: Transportation dollars extend, transform urban path

Sitka’s urban Cross Trail is about to get a little bigger, thanks to an infusion of nearly $1-million in federal transportation funding. Sitka Trail Works is developing the trail in partnership with the City of Sitka and the US Forest Service. The non-profit trail builder has learned how to tap federal transportation dollars to get more Sitkans outside on foot or on bikes, including KCAW’s Robert Woolsey.

Trail Works, city partner on Cross Trail extension

Sitka Trail Works president Brian Hanson discusses phase 5 of the Sitka Cross Trail project -- an extension to Baranof St. and Yaw Dr., with a new access at Pherson St. Trail Works is hoping to raise a $12,000 local match for the $920,000 federally-funded project.
